What happens in Vegas stays in…doesn’t matter – we brought the kids with us >eyeroll<
Neither of us had been to Vegas before and we were only 3 hours away so thought why not, even with the kids! I’m so glad we did, it really was as fun and crazy as expected.
We didn’t do lots of research before going, just watched a few of Travel Rubys youtube vids to get an idea of what the highlights would be, and asked friends about hotels they’d recommend.
We choose in the Mirage (the pool looked great for the kids) and we weren’t disappointed…although standard minibar “you move it you buy it” nonsense not helped by the kids firing a ball around the room and knocking all the sweets off their weight sensors!
Most days were spent at the pool until the afternoon as it was only place we felt cool, but also gave the kids a chance to make friends with other kids and give us a reprieve from parenting for a few hours.
When we did venture out on the first day we did some of the must sees/dos like the I love sugar store, the flamingo garden, the volcano at the mirage, the miracle mile and the fountains at the Bellagio. We stayed across the road for the volcano as Rory hates fire but we could still feel the heat from there!
The biggest shock in Vegas overall was the heat. We should have checked the weather before booking – it was 47C the whole time we were there! It meant walking for long wasn’t really an option. That said on day 2 we braved it as far as the Lux to watch the Blue Man Group and honestly nearly killed the kids…bonus was they were too tired to whinge!
The BMG was definitely worth it for the kids – we had seen BMG before but the kids hadn’t and they honestly loved it. I wasn’t blown away this time around – it was nearly the same as the firt show I saw back in 2007.
The only real stress in Vegas was the car – we drove a Tesla there and in that extreme heat (even in a shaded car park) the car activated a cooling system so when we went to load the cases on day 3 the battery was almost empty. We had to spend well over an hour in ridiculous traffic with limited aircon and virtually no battery to get it charged!
Things we loved:
- Mirage pool
- Mirage Mojitos
- General vibe and buzz of the strip
- How surreal the whole place was.
Things we’d do differently next time:
- Not take a Tesla
- Probably stay at the Venetian
- Not take the kids
- Gamble more
- Not spend any money on Prime or Pokémon cards
